The description
The "Tokuno" in the title of this croissant with custard, refers to a thicker, richer custard and a buttery aroma in the croissant, pitching it as a premium product at an affordable price
The good
My husband picked this up at Welcia for the kids, but I ended up eating it. I was skeptical of a croissant with custard, but I was pleasantly surprised that the custard actually pairs very well with the croissant. The custard was particularly nice. The croissant was quite dry, but no drier than any other croissant. It is soft and buttery with a gentle aroma. The croissant is cut with the thick custard in the fatter / fuller part of the croissant. So while my first bite, with just croissant, didn't leave a particular impression, when I got to the custard part I was a lot more satisfied!
The not so good
While the Tokunō Croissant Custard promises richness, the texture may feel a bit too soft for those expecting a crisp croissant. The custard is thick and sweet, but some might find it slightly heavy or one‑note after a few bites. Because it’s a packaged pastry, the butter aroma is milder than the label suggests. It’s convenient and affordable, but not quite a substitute for a freshly baked custard croissant. Yamazaki Bakery prices vary greatly by store / location. I got this while it was at a discounted price. I would buy it again at 109 yen again, but I wouldn't pay more than 120 yen for it.
