Yen Surges on Suspected Government Intervention
In my previous post I shared one of the big news stories in Japan as we close July 2026 - the announcement of a consumption tax reduction from April 2027. The other big story dominating the news is the yen surge.
The yen staged its sharpest jump since 2022, climbing more than 2–3% against the U.S. dollar after touching four‑decade lows earlier in the week. Analysts widely believe Japan’s finance ministry conducted yen‑buying, dollar‑selling intervention, with unusually heavy trading volumes reinforcing the suspicion.
According to Reuters, the move came just ahead of the Bank of Japan’s policy decision, as authorities sought to counter the currency’s slide amid rising import costs and inflation pressures.
