Ramen for success!
Of the many anniversaries, commemorations and observances on May 9th annually, Success Day 合格の日 was one of a handful that stood out to me, and I decided to research a bit further. But I was both disappointed and intrigued to learn that the anniversary is more about ramen than "success" or rather "ramen for success"!
The anniversary was interestingly established by the well-known ramen chain Ichiran. Although I know the chain and have a child that frequents it, I was unaware that they have a "gokaku ramen" or "success ramen"! Although, it would appear it is quite well known in Fukuoka, because that is where that particular 'success' ramen is served.
The branch is located near Dazaifu Tenmangu, a shrine dedicated to the diety of learning. Reportedly, the ramen features symbolic elements such as a five‑sided bowl and noodles measuring 59 centimeters, all designed to bring luck to students and anyone striving toward a goal. They chose 5/9 which can be read as "gou (5) kaku (9)" which is the Japanese for success, as "success day" by associating it with their "success ramen"!
Have you ever had "success ramen"? (*The photo in this post is just a generic photo of ramen and not of "success ramen"!)

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
