Daily Life, Daily Salt
Today, and July 3rd annually, is Salt and Daily Life Day
塩と暮らしの日 in Japan. The anniversary was created by the Salt Industry Center of Japan, a public interest foundation based in Tokyo. The organization research salt, manages its supply and maintains national reserves - such is the importance of salt in Japan.
By creating the anniversary, the association aims to highlight how essential salt is to the human body. Reportedly, Japan’s geography made salt production historically difficult, requiring labor‑intensive methods such as evaporating seawater or boiling brine. Thus, the day invites people to appreciate the effort behind this important staple of Japan.
There is the other side to salt in Japan too - it is used in both Shinto and Buddhist rituals. Salt is widely known as a Shinto purifier, but in Japan it also appears in Buddhist‑influenced folk customs, especially around death. Adding an extra layer to the importance of salt in Japan.
