A day for illustrations for children

There is a term in Japanese "dōga" (童画) that is often translated as "Children's Illustrations", but more than just referring to illustrations by children it mainly refers to illustrations for children. Takei Takeo is widely remembered as the "father of doga" and he created illustrations especially for children.

Today, and March 8th annually, is Children's Illustration Day 童画の日 in his honor. The date celebrates the opening of the first Takei Takao Children's Illustration exhibition at a gallery in Ginza in 1925. Moreover, it was at this exhibition that the word "doga" appeared for the very first time.

You can see his work though at the Ilf Doga Museum in his hometown of Okaya City, in Nagano Prefecture. They also have a permanent exhibition of the work of American illustrator Maurice Sendak (of Where the Wild Things Are fame, pictured).
