Son Goku Day, a day Dragon Ball fans can get behind!
Today, and May 9th annually, is Son Goku Day 悟空の日 in Japan. The anniversary was created by Toei Company who were the distributor of the 2015 movie Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F. They chose the date because 5/9 can be read as "go (5) kuu (9)".
Son Goku is the main hero of the long-running, much loved, Japanese series Dragon Ball, created by manga artist Akira Toriyama. He is a cheerful, energetic character who has inspired young people the world over. What makes Goku so beloved is his pure heart, optimism and eagerness to help others, even former enemies. The purpose of "Son Goku day" is to share the appeal of Dragon Ball Z and Son Goku with even more people.
Even for people who have never watched Dragon Ball, Goku is widely recognized as one of Japan’s most iconic pop‑culture characters. Goku remains a symbol of optimism, strength, and boundless curiosity, making this day a celebration of both a character and a cultural icon.

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
