Preparing for summer on 'nagoshi' day

Today, June 30th, is summer meal day. It is called 'nagoshi gohan no hi'. The nagoshi is a play on a more famous and long practiced shinto ritual of 'nagoshi no harae' which is carried out on June 30th annually. 'Nagoshi' combines the two kanji 'summer' and 'to cross' as in to pass or surpass, climb or overcome. 'Nagoshi' is sometimes just translated as summer or summer solstice, but I take it to mean to like a 'summer passing'.

The idea behind 'nagoshi gohan no hi', summer meal day, is to exorcise any bad luck from the first half of the year and prays for good health for the remaining half of the year. Like what the 'nagoshi no harae' purification ritual does at the shrines. In addition, the hope is that people will build up the strength to endure the hot summer and start the second half of the year with renewed spirits.

The 'nagoshi gohan' is made by topping rice with millet and beans with round kakiage made from summer vegetables, reminiscent of a chinowa, pictured, and drizzled with grated daikon radish sauce flavored with ginger. "Beans" are said to ward off evil spirits. "Ginger," which is in season, is said to ward off all kinds of evil (diseases and disasters).

Have you ever eaten Nagoshi no Gohan?
