Learning through travel - facts about Kurobe Gorge
Travel has a way of surprising us, even after years of exploring Japan’s mountains, rivers, and hidden corners. Kurobe Gorge is one of the places that has surprised me the most in recent years. I ended up there quite by serendipity and without knowing much about it. To be honest, all I really knew was that it is home to the Kurobe Dam, which has long been on my list of places I want to visit.
But on my visit there I learned several key things about the gorge. Quite soon after I arrived, I noticed a sign declaring proudly that it is the deepest V-shaped gorge in Japan. It was carved over millennia by the powerful Kurobe River. The numbers alone are astonishing; an 86‑kilometer ravine with nearly 3,000 meters of elevation difference from peak to riverbed - but the true impact comes from being there.
I also learned that the gorge is recognized as one of Japan's Three Great Gorges and that it appears on the official list of the 100 Best Unexplored Areas in Japan - accolades I wholeheartedly agree with. But the biggest and best surprise of all is that the famous sightseeing trolley (minecart) train winds its way through the gorge. Watching those little orange cars trace the cliffs and cross the bridges feels magical and riding them gives you a front‑row seat to one of the most dramatic landscapes Japan has to offer.
