The Use of Eggs in Tsukimi Dishes

You may have noticed that many of Japan's Tsukimi dishes use eggs. The reason is simple: a round egg yolk resembles the bright autumn full moon. A round egg yolk resembles the autumn full moon. Because of this, foods topped with a raw, soft-cooked, or fried egg are often called "tsukimi" dishes.

The association is so strong that these dishes are enjoyed year-round, though popularity rises sharply during the autumn moon viewing season. Moreover, many restaurant chains, fast-food outlets, and supermarkets also release limited-edition tsukimi-themed foods at this time of year. Tsukimi burgers are particularly popular, featuring an egg layered on top of the burger patty to evoke the image of the harvest moon.

Traditionally, however, Tsukimi itself is a moon-viewing celebration that features offerings such as tsukimi dango (rice dumplings) and susuki (pampas grass) rather than eggs. The connection between eggs and tsukimi developed later as culinary traditions evolved, with the golden yolk serving as a visual representation of the full moon.
