Wildlife to Watch Out For in Japan’s Forests

Japan’s forests are beautiful, but they also contain a few creatures and creepy crawlies that require awareness. Some are truly dangerous, such as suzumebachi, Japan’s giant hornets, venomous snakes like mamushi, and mukade, the large poisonous centipedes found in humid forest areas. Wild boar can also be unpredictable if startled. Staying vigilant, watching where you step, and avoiding dense undergrowth help keep encounters rare.

In recent years, bears and ticks have also become increasingly concerning. Bears will get a post all of their own, but ticks deserve attention too. Reports of tick bites are rising, especially in tall grass or thick vegetation. They can carry infections, so wearing long sleeves, long trousers, and using insect repellent is a simple way to reduce risk. After a forest walk, a quick clothing and skin check is an easy habit that keeps you safe.
