A day for "good" husbands and wives
Today, and April 22nd annually, is Good Husband And Wife Day よい夫婦の日 (yoi fufu no hi) in Japan. The reason for the date is a play on how 4/22 can be read as "yo (4) fu (2) fu (2)"; the Japanese for good husband and wife.
Rather than focusing on dramatic romance or gestures, Good Husband and Wife Day honors the quiet everyday bond that strengthens over the years. In a culture where modesty and restraint are often valued, this anniversary offers a socially "safe" excuse to express appreciation to your spouse more openly.
At its heart, Good Husband and Wife Day is about gratitude for partnership. Many couples use the day as a chance to say the words that often swallowed by every day busy lives: "thank you", "I am glad you are my spouse" etc. The anniversary quietly acknowledges that a "good" marriage is something nurtured, day by day, with mutual respect, compromise and shared responsibility.
