Lacetop Hydrangea, a birthday flower of July 13th

Lacetop Hydrangea, a birthday flower of July 13th photo

Among the birthday flowers of July 13th annually is Lacetop hydrangea, known as ガクアジサイ (Gaku‑ajisai) in Japanese. Gaku‑ajisai is the elegant original form of the hydrangea, native to Japan’s coastal regions such as the Bōsō and Izu peninsulas.

Unlike the familiar round “temari” blooms, Gaku‑ajisai forms a flat, lace‑like circle: tiny fertile flowers gather densely at the center, while larger decorative sepals frame them like a delicate border. This style is the reason for its name, and it gives the flower a gentle, understated beauty that feels deeply tied to early summer in Japan.

In the Japanese language of flowers, hanakotoba, hydrangeas in general carry surprisingly negative meanings, despite their prevalence and popularity in Japan. They can represent "fickleness", "coldness", "cruelty" and "arrogance".  The only positive word associated with them in traditional hanakotoba is "perseverance".
