Finding a New Dentist in Fukuoka

Since I have a minor problem with my gums I need to have a good dentist that can speak English to be able to easily express my dental woes. Therefore, when I moved to Kitakyushu, that’s the first thing I looked into.

However, to my disappointment, I couldn’t find one that lives near me but there is one in Fukuoka City, which is called Yasumasu Dental Clinic.

Where is Yasumasu Dental Clinic?

I was hesitant to go to this dental clinic because it’s a little far from where I live. It’s located in Tenjin, one of Fukuoka City’s popular shopping spots.

As much as possible, I wanted something that is close by because the fare from Kitakyushu to Tenjin by train is quite pricey. Then, one day, I discovered that there is a highway bus that goes from where I live to Tenjin. I didn’t need to transfer or walk that from the bus station because it’s just a 5-minute walk from where I live, plus the Tenjin Express Bus Terminal is just 550 meters away from the dental clinic.

It's on the second floor.

The express bus only costs 2,200 yen, while the one-way train and subway is about 1,520 to 2,570 yen. The train is faster than the bus, but I don’t mind the long ride. The bus is more comfortable and I can even charge my phone.

Scheduling a Visit

Yasumasu Dental Clinic has a lot of good reviews online, so aside from the transportation, it’s one of the reasons that finally convinced me to try them out.

The clinic has an English website and you can book by phone or online. The online booking system is easy to understand. You need to create a profile and just select the time and date you want to go, as well as the service you want to have. After a couple of minutes, you’ll receive an email confirming your appointment.

According to their website, walk-in patients are okay, however, I highly suggest booking a scheduled appointment just to be safe.

First Check-up and Cleaning

When I first got there the receptionist greeted me nicely. She spoke to me in Japanese, which was okay for me. I can at least understand basic Japanese hence I was able to respond to her. I’m not sure about the level of her English though.

After the greeting, I was asked to fill out a form, but to my surprise, I could do it on my phone. Most of the time it’s on a piece of paper. It was very convenient. I have got to give Yasumasu Dental Clinic a high-five for going paperless.

Since I had an appointment I didn’t need to wait long. I met Dr. Yasumasu and told him about my dental problems. His English is pretty good and we were able to converse very well. His assistant was the one that cleaned my teeth, which was good. She wasn’t rough in flossing my teeth, which I appreciated.

When we were done with the session, Dr. Yasumasu told me that he would contact me after 6 months to check and clean my teeth again. I was scared that he would ask me to go back again after a week to continue cleaning my teeth because that’s what I have experienced before, which made my gums worse.

Pricing

I used my Japanese Health Insurance and paid around 7,000 yen for it. It costs pretty much the same as my dentist in Tokyo.

Verdict

Will I come back again? Of course. Dr. Yasumasu was knowledgeable about what he does and easy to talk to. However, I do miss my dentist in Tokyo (Hitomi Dental Office) and I usually get a discount for my teeth cleaning on my birthday, LOL. They did a really good job in taking care of my teeth, hence I have that attachment.

If I’m in Tokyo after 6 months, I will go to my dentist there, but for now, I’ll go to Yasumasu Dental Clinic.
