Sensory experience, relief from summer heat

About a 30 minute bus ride from Karuizawa Station is the spectacular Shiraito waterfall. The name means white threads, describing the water pouring over a 3 metre high ridge into a pool about 70 metres wide. The falls are the headwaters of the Yukawa River, fed by runoff from volcanic Mt. Asama. The experience stimulates the senses. The forest itself is fragrant, the gushing water is a treat to see, and you can reach down into the pool to rinse your hands in the chilly water. I recommend taking the bus as the Shiraito Highland Way (a toll road) is narrow and parking is limited.
