One Stop Shopping in the Area
If you are visiting Echigo Yuzawa for the onsen and ryokan time, especially during the winter time, you might not get a lot of time to shop and do other activities like that. At the station that you probably arrived at and will leave from, however, you can find a lot of things to do and buy here. There are plenty of stores for souvenir shopping, and the sake sampling (for a cheap fee) is a great way to try local sake, and Niigata is famous for that because of their beautiful water and rice. You can eat your meals here as well before getting back onto the Shinkansen to go.

Nice station with lots of amenities
Echigo Yuzawa is a really nice station to transit through - there are so many amenities that make it an easy spot to while away some time. One of the most loved attractions here is the Ponshukan where you can sample local sake and learn a bit more about it, and there are numerous quality restaurants, cafes, and more. The station is served by the Joetsu local line and the Joetsu Shinkansen. It's a very easy to navigate station too, which is helpful if you're in a hurry!
