Kurume Sou Udon

A long time ago I heard that Kurume's udon is different. Kurume Sou was recommended as the best place in town for udon, so I finally made it there. The restaurant is shokudou style and seats a lot of people despite being small. On a weekday at lunchtime it was crowded with no wait to be seated. Their basic menus are only in Japanese, but there are pictures to help guide you. The main order would be udon of course with a choice of two basic toppings: fried burdock or a fishcake. Other options are meat, meat with an egg, kitsune, etc. There are also a couple sides and the big inari zushi was recommended. The other option is onigiri. Both come as a set of two with soft kombu included. The broth is made from kombu and niboshi (dried fish) and the noodles are very soft compared to usual udon. Seasonal menus are also available, like zaru soba during summer. Prices are very reasonable - I came away full sharing one inari zushi plate and with the fried burdock udon at 610 yen total.
