Beautiful grounds
We visited here a couple of years back, mainly at the insistence of my husband who is very much into Japanese history. I was more enthusiastic about the grounds, which are very picturesque and scenic - there's a moat with koi, lovely bridges, pretty landscaped trees and such. We visited right at the end of summer and could already see the trees beginning to change, so I can only imagine that it would be stunning in autumn. If you're a history buff you'll probably give it five stars!

A Cool Shrine to visit for those interested in Japan's Samurai History
Yonezawa is a cool city, and at the heart of it all is Uesugi Shrine. Named for the Uesugi clan, the most famous member of whom was Uesugi Kenshin--a famous daimyo and among Japan's greatest military strategists. The shrine is serene and charming, though it's not the shrine itself that makes this a great spot to visit--it's the grounds that it sits upon. The shrine grounds are flanked by canals. Some city planners in the period of warring states opted to use winding streets to confuse invaders and lead them to traps, but Uesugi opted for the use of canals so he could keep an organized layout while still being able to manage the flow of a potential conflict if it reached the city. For history buffs, all of this is explained on well placed signage around the shrine. Another thing that's great about the shrine grounds is the artwork. There are many statues in the area, helping to tell the story of the shrine and Yonezawa's interesting history. For me, this was the highlight of Yamagata.
