Showa-era western food, gorgeous retro interior
Covian, with two locations near Abiko Station's south exit, has been a fixture in the city since the 1960s. The main restaurant, Covian, is housed in a tall wooden Tudor-style building. You can't miss it. The menu features yoshoku, the Japanese version of Western food. The bases for curry, soup, and other dishes are all made in-house. The attention to ingredients and preparation make the food look appealing and the flavours are rich. The portions are generous, too. I had beef curry with chicken cutlet. The chicken is crispy and the beef curry aromatic. The set I ordered comes with a salad and onion soup. There are options for other sides with the set menus. The wait staff mistook my order (I had chosen the pottage), and quickly corrected with smiles. Both soups, the onion and the pottage were delicious with complex flavours. You can call wait staff to take your order, or use QR codes at the tables. Cashless payment is also available. And sit a while sipping the delicious coffee! The stained glass windows, dark wooden beams transport you to 19th-century Europe.
