Late night (ish) bar option on the edges of American Village, Okinawa

Okinawa Brewing Company is one of a handful of bars that line the southern flank of the colorful (if a bit plastic) shopping / entertainment complex of American Village in the Mihama district of Okinawa’s main island. As the shops begin to close it’s easy to pick out this bar (and the others around it), just follow the sound of music (or is it karaoke?). This particular location of Okinawa Brewing Company is the brewery’s cafe / tap room (the brewery and office is a few kilometers north of Kadena) which fronts a pleasant street that lines one of the canals around here. The bar’s terrace might well be a good place to kick back with a beer and partake in some people watching, during the day. As it was, I was here at around 10:00 pm on a Wednesday and, as with much of Okinawa, life seems to go to bed early, including in and around American Village. Still, at the time of visiting, there were quite a few punters at Okinawa Brewing Company almost all of whom were not Japanese. The bar terrace is a nice spot (and the only option for smokers). Inside, a fairly long counter doglegs around one side of the space with stools and high tables in the middle and a handful of booths on the other side of the room. The music playing that night seemed to be exclusively catering to a “North American / British” palate, at a volume that made sense (especially for a Wednesday night). A message on the sign board outfront stated that Okinawa Brewing Company has some 24 beers on tap which by any estimation is a lot! Beers on tap are listed on a series of flat screen displays that look like they belong in the departure lounge of an airport. Prices generally range from 600 yen for a half and up to 1,400 yen for a pint with offerings coming from breweries from around the U.S. Place your orders by the cash register at the bar. Okinawa Brewing Company has a limited selection of soft drinks (cola, ginger ale, Fanta e.t.c) for around 250 yen. Service, as with many places in this part of town, is available in English (which is probably the default setting in these parts). All of the craft beers served at Okinawa Brewing Company are in the form of ales. Most of those on tap are available year round but there are some limited editions sprinkled onto the menu to keep your eyes open for. This being Okinawa, I opted to go with a half of the Beni-Imo Ale. Now, it had been a while since I ordered a half-pint of anything, and I was quite surprised by how small it was. Overall, I found the cafe / taproom of Okinawa Brewing Company to be a pleasant place, spacious, friendly and with, of course, a wide range of beers to choose from. The terrace, whether smoker or not, is surely the best place to take a pew. In terms of access, if you’re with a driver then make use of the parking at American Village which is very close by and free. It’s likely to be a bit short of space during the day, but after dark there should be plenty of spaces available, especially after the shops close. There’s a convenience store nearby if you need to withdraw money. Hours: There seems to be some conflict on the website with one page stating hours for Saturdays and Sundays starting from 13:00. On another page they start from 16:00. Mon: Closed Tues - Thurs: 16:00 - 23:00 Fri - Sat: 13: 00 or 16:00 (?) - 24:00 Sun: 13:00 or 16:00 (?) - 23:00
