Ise Jingu connection at an elegant shrine

Funabashi City's oldest shrine honors Amaterasu, the sun goddess of the Shinto pantheon. Legend says Prince Yamato Takeru founded the temple in antiquity to stave off drought. The shoguns paid their respects by offering copious amounts of rice. The grounds are quite extensive, with a long tree-lined approach bordered by statuary, a wisteria trellis, and a rare lighthouse that displays a fusion of western and Japanese design. When you're in Funabashi City, it's worth a visit to get a sense of the history of the city.
