Kyoto vibes at an Abiko garden and sukiya house

Abiko City, known as "Kamakura of the north", inspired some literati and artists to establish villas. They're lovingly preserved and dot the slope above Teganuma Marsh. The first time I visited this Taisho-era site, the gardeners let me in to look around, and I took a few photos. The city now opens the garden on the second and fourth Saturdays, from April to November. Admission is free; no reservation required. The house with deep eaves, vintage hardware, and nods to sukiya architecture is lovely. The garden, though altered from the original plan, has charming strolling paths that recall Kyoto beauty spots, shaded by evergreen and sawtooth oaks. In case of rain, the garden may be closed.

Periodically opened home of a philosopher

This villa, one of a handful in Abiko City associated with Shirakaba avant-garde journalists and artists, is a challenge to visit. But if you have the patience and interest, you're rewarded with a view into the lifestyle of a Taisho era luminary. The villa is the former home of Saneatsu Mushashinokoji, a polymath who resided in Abiko City. The house and garden are well preserved. But the challenge is visiting it! I was fortunate to pass by one afternoon when gardeners were pruning the trees. I asked if I could have a glimpse of the garden and they let me in. If you're patient and determined to see this gorgeous property, I recommend you keep an eye on the Abiko City homepage for the next opening. The villa is occasionally opened to the public. It's a challenge to see it.
