Closed long term for an overhaul
The Shitamachi Museum closed earlier this year, in April 2023, for renovations. They are closed for a full TWO years, so it must be some overhaul they are undertaking. I am excited to see what they do with the place. It will reopen for business from March or April 2025. Please note the entrance price may be raised when they reopen.

Learn about Tokyo of times gone by
Tokyo was once a city divided into two distinct areas - the Yamanote area (seen as the upper class area), and the Shitamachi area (more working class, filled with artisans and merchants). Shitamachi consisted of modern-day dachi, Arakawa, Chiyoda , Chuo, Edogawa, Katsushika, Koto, Sumida, and Taito wards, and the Shitamachi Museum in Ueno provides a bit of a glimpse into this side of the city. There are some cool shitmachi relics such as reconstructions of old merchant stores and homes, retro toys, and more. Do note they close on Mondays if you plan on stopping by.
