A beach with a nostalgic theme song

Yuigahama Beach at Kamakura City is popular for summer getaways from busy Tokyo. But I got to enjoy it on a winter morning. The beach in winter is sparsely populated with dog walkers and windsurfers on a sunny day. The beach has great winter vistas of Oshima and the Izu Peninsula to the southwest and the hillsides above Kamakura and Zushi Cities. And it has background music! At the foot of the avenue that leaves to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, spot a stone monument inscribed with the song "Sakurakai no Uta". It's a nostalgic tune from the 1940s recalling the sakura shells that used to be bountiful on the beach.

    Great beach for family fun

It's been some years now since I've visited Yuigahama Beach, but when I lived closer to the area we went there on several occasions. The spacious sandy area is great for building sandcastles with kiddos, and on the times we've been there it hasn't been particularly crowded. The fact that the water is pretty shallow to enter means it's good for younger folks who just want to play in the water and not necessarily go swimming. The beach is fairly popular with surfers, so if that's your jam you may want to visit for that reason. There are also quite a few beachside restaurants if you want to grab a meal while you're in the area.

    Long stretch of sandy beachfront

I have no idea of a better place to enjoy a decent beach approximately an hour away from Tokyo. Yuigahama beach is a pleasant break from my hectic routine in Tokyo. It's famous not only for water sports but also for summer festivals. In the past years, most events were canceled due to the pandemic. But this year, things are getting back to normal. Pop-up beach houses, restaurants, and bars were lined up along the beach shore. People were out to enjoy swimming, surfing, or sitting on the sandy beach. When you come, you've got to love the summer vibes of the whole Shonan area!
