Tranquil temple with hydrangeas and more

Located a short drive (under 10 minutes) from Naoetsu Station, Gochi Kokubunji Temple in Joetsu is a tranquil destination which has around 1200 years of history. It was ordered to be built by Emperor Shomu as a place to pray for peace and prosperity, but the building seen there today is a restoration -- like a lot of places here, natural disasters have played their part in destroying original structures. At this time of year there are quite a few hydrangeas around the grounds, which makes for a lovely strolling experience. No admission fee, and free parking is available.
