East meets west art and architecture
The studio and residence of sculptor Asakura Fumio, built in the 1930s, is worth a look. The structure itself is interesting for its blend of sukiya style and modern architecture. It combines concrete, timber, and bamboo motifs, designed by the artist himself. The sculptures might remind you of Rodin. Asakura, known as the founder of Japanese modern sculpture, was inspired by European masterpieces. For garden and design fans, the museum is a must-see for the courtyard and greenhouse, a designated place of scenic beauty. And look for the cat art! Asakura had great affection for his cat.
