Great Station for Convenience
I used to use this station about twice a month in the past, and I took it for granted how convenient this station really is. The location is close to Ueno park and the shopping arcade, as well as a ton of great restaurants. There are many JR lines connected to this station, as well as many other lines for easy access. On top of all that, the station is beautiful from afar under sunlight. The Ueno Station is not one that I would say "go to Ueno to check it out" like Tokyo Station, but it is a "when you are in Ueno for the zoo/park/museum/shopping/eating, check out when you are there" location.

One of the better ones
If I had to name my favorite train station in downtown Tokyo, it would have to be Ueno Station. Perhaps it is a nostalgic choice as once upon a time it was the station that connected me to Tokyo from Ibaraki. But Ueno station is definitely one of the better organized stations in my humble opinion. It is easy to navigate and there are less people than the other famous stations on the Yamanote line. Moreover, directly around the station there is plenty to do with Ueno park and all it has to offer, and retro Tokyo in the Ameyoko alley.

A must- see station
Some local people describe Ueno station as an old Japanese town. I couldn't agree more. There are many Japanese bars, restaurants, and small shops along the famous street of Ameyoko market. The area around Ameyoko is often crowded and noisy but it’s easy to escape and head to the park. It takes about a 10-15 minute walk from the market. There is a big pond and there are some benches for you to rest and enjoy the scenery. Boating is another good option to do.

Stress-free station with a lot of amenities
When catching the shinkansen from Niigata to Tokyo, I almost always opt to board/disembark through Ueno Station rather than Tokyo Station when it's practical. I find Ueno so much more chill and organized, and there are so many amenities within the station itself. There are plenty of ways to pass time at the station while you're waiting for a train (such as the directly connected malls), and a million and one options just outside the station itself, like Ueno Park, Ameya Yokocho, and more.
