Koshiji Maple Garden

One of the Nagaoka area's best spots for autumn

Looking ahead to the leaf changing period, one of the best places I can recommend in the local area is the Koshiji Maple Garden in Nagaoka. It has a history dating back to the late 1800s, where it was developed for the Takahashi family who were prominent landowners in the area. When the leaves are at their best there is usually a festival held at the garden, along with after-dark illuminations that make the area look extra magical. Do keep in mind that the garden is only open from April to the end of November -- the area's snow keeps it closed over the winter period.
