Access to Okachimachi and Matsuzakaya Department Store
This is a quirky station for its history and platforms. In 1930, when Matsuzakaya Department Store management learned of the construction of this station, the first impulse was to name it much like the upscale Mitsukoshi-Mae Station. The corporation lost the bid to the Tokyo Underground Railway and it was named Ueno-Hirokoji. The compromise is that no other department store can have ads, and even if the line added express trains, all trains stop here. Beware of the entrances! There are two platforms, one for each direction and no passage, so be sure to check the entrance and your direction.
