Tokugawa shoguns and Miyamoto Musashi connections
Walk west of Myoden Station on the Tozai line to Teramachi Dori, the temple street to begin a mini-pilgrimage. The 33 temples of Gyotoku and Urayas route starts at Tokuganji. The Jodo sect temple's red gate and bell tower date from 1770, and there is a rotating sutra repository from the Meiji era. The temple was founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and it's said that the shoguns hunted along the nearby Edo River. The famed swordsman Miyamoto Mushashi is remembered here with a Jizo statue. The temple preserves some of his letters and drawings.
