Magnificent kaya tree at a 16th century temple
This temple is a 10-minute walk from the closest station, Tennodai on the Joban Line. It's worth a look for its history and natural monument, a kaya tree. The temple was founded in 1540 by a lord of the Hojo clan based at Odawara Castle. The principal image in the temple is Yakushi Nyorai. In the garden is a huge kaya tree, known as Japanese nutmeg yew.. This tree is said to be over 200 years old and is recognized as a natural monument of Chiba Prefecture. Nutmeg yew is a very hard wood that is used to make game pieces for go and shogi. Because of over harvesting of kaya lumber, Japan lists it as a protected tree. When you visit keep in mind the cemetery there has many visitors paying their respects. It's a very quiet place.
