Bamboo grove alternative closer to Tokyo
With all the overtourism issues that Kyoto is facing, it's always a good reminder that there are other places you can get a similar vibe without the crazy crowds. If you want the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove feel closer to Tokyo, Hokokuji in Kamakura is a solid option. Buses are available from Kamakura Station to the general area of the temple, or there is a small parking area. Only 400 yen for admission which I don't think is a bad deal at all.

Bamboo temple of Kamakura
This small Rinzai sect temple was built in the Muromachi period and most of its structures were lost to the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1932. From the gate it doesn't look that interesting, but just inside is a garden with a variety of views from shady, mossy glades to rockery paths to Zen garden. A great time to go is on an autumn afternoon to catch the sunlight filtering through the bamboo grove.
