    Pizza...farmhouse?

Nestled in the lush green almost-wilderness in Akiu, Sendai's nearby hiking and waterfall related space, the experienced driver may find this little shop and immediately mistake it for a residence, which it clearly once was. Now the place is apparently the most happening pizza joint in town. We went on a weekday around noon and the place was pretty full though we still had no trouble being seated. The menu was a little pricey, with each individual sized pizza costing 1600 yen or more. Chalking it up to the cost of transporting the necessary ingredients up to this location, we went for three selections including the traditional margherita, a mixed variety meant to include artichoke hearts, bacon and olives, and a chocolate and banana dessert pizza. The first pizza was delicious but there was already a problem. The brick oven paking method is awesome, but the dough needs to be made in such a way that it can support the toppings, especially if they are only cheese and basil leaves. This dough was left too thick when baking. Personally, I love deep dish pizza, but that requires baking a pizza in the appropriate, thick-lipped pan, which is not really conducive to the brick oven baking experience. While the menu came with instructions on how to eat the resulting pizza with a knife and fork, I resisted this and continued suffering through topping avalanches. The second problem I had with this place is that our mixed topping pizza, which I had read through all the listed toppings of prior to ordering it, came with magical, mysterious, previously unmentioned mushrooms. Being someone who cannot stand the edible fungus, I backed off and drank my Italian Beer instead, which was refreshing. The choco banana pizza was nice enough, but suffer the same dough problems that the previous 2 had, though gratefully without any hidden mushrooms. You can tell from the way the place is set up that they put some time and attention into trying to obtain the shabby-chic idea, but being a little old Japanese house means regardless of the decorations, voices carry easily through the barely insulated walls and being in there when more than a handful of other guests are negates the pleasantness of the dining-in-the-countryside idea. For the higher-that-necessary price and the mystery shrooms, I'm not likely to be back any time soon.
