Shrine with rabbit chozuya and moon-watching tradition

This shrine in Urawa Ward, Saitama City, has lush trees, some ancient ones on little islands in the streets. It's shady and atmospheric. It's also referred to as Tsukinomiya (you'll see the name on Google Maps). The shrine has tall trees behind the main shrine, a kagura stage, and a pond. It's associated with the moon-phase watching. Displayed on a pillar is a kanban indicating that the shrine has two observations a month, on the first and the 15th. But the big draw is the rabbits. The chozuya, the hand-washing basin, is fed by a rabbit statue, and in the pond behind the kagura stage are rabbit statues. It's a calm place surrounded by zelkova trees, designated as a Saitama natural monument.

    The rabbit shrine

Tsuki Shrine is a pretty famous shrine within Saitama Prefecture. One of the reasons is because it has rabbit Komainu (Komainu are usually lion dogs). The shrine is always popular for 'hatsumode', first prayers of the year, but particularly in the year of the rabbit. Right now is 7-5-3 season so they have a couple of festival stalls at the shrine, but they weren't operating today. One was a choco banana stall. You can pick up rabbit shapped amulets here as well as amulets and prayer votives with rabbit designs on them. Amulets cost 500 yen.
