What it lacks in size it makes up for in beauty

Mukojima-Hyakkaen Garden is located in Tokyo's Sumida area, and although it's smaller than some of the city's better-known green spaces, what it lacks in size it makes up for in beauty. It's home to some wisteria trellises which bloom during spring, hydrangeas in summer, chrysanthemums and fall foliage in autumn, and even camellias in winter -- so you've got something to enjoy no matter the time of year. It is a paid garden, with admission at a very reasonable 150 yen for adults -- I don't think that's a bad deal at all.

    Mukojima-Hyakkaen Garden

Very close to the Higashi-Mukojima Station is the small Japanese garden Mukojima-Hyakkaen. The Mukojima-Hyakkaen Garden, also called 100 flower Garden, was built at the beginning of the 19th century and was created by the antique dealer Sawara Kiku. He wanted to create a garden where 100 flowers should bloom all year round. In 1939, the garden was made accessible to the general public. Like other Japanese gardens, there is a small pond with many small bridges in the center. The whole year around flowers can be admired in the garden. When I was there, I could see flower-lilies and hydrangeas blooming. The most impressing part in the garden is a bamboo-shaped long tunnel, where bush clover is growing around. Unfortunately it was too early to see the clover blossom. The right season for that is in september. The garden also has a small bamboo forest and there are large stones throughout the garden where rhymes and poems by famous Japanese poets can be found. Entrance fee is 150 Yen for adults. The garden is perfect for a nice walk in the afternoon.
