Unique spot for old and new toys

We visited the Warabekan several years ago on a trip to Tottori, and it's still one of my most memorable museum experiences. The premises spans three floors, with sections dedicated to children's music and nursery rhymes, and a variety of different toys on display. A number of them are behind glass cabinets, but there are a wide range of toys which can actually be played with. A lot of fun for both kids and kids at heart. International passport holders get a discount on admission, so bring it along with you!

Nostalgia, Culture, History, and Fun in One Museum

Hands down, the Warabekan is the best toy museum I’ve ever visited, but that’s because it’s not just a toy museum. It’s not some place where you go to look at old doll collections—this place is about reliving childhoods or (for young kids) enjoying your present childhood. There are various sections with different degrees of interactiveness. One section shows the evolution of toys in Japan. There is even a mock Showa-era toy store front. Another is an interactive toy section that lets kids learn the basics of mechanics and how toys work through play. There is a section with a mock shows-era school. Another section has musical toys and karaoke. There is lots to do there, and the price is right. Admission to the Warabekan is 500 yen for adults, and free for Junior High Students and younger. It is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, closed only on New Years and the 3rd Wednesday of each month (if Wednesday is a holiday, the next day is closed). The easiest way to get there by public transport is taking the 100 yen Green Kururi Loop Bus which stops right in front of the museum.
