If you want to elevate your standard udon noodle experience I would highly recommend a visit to Udon Chujiro in Tokamachi. The udon here is made from scratch, and maybe it sounds over the top but it really is the best udon I've had. The value for money is excellent, too, with udon sets priced at 850 yen (and it's a lot of food/side dishes). Well worth checking out if you're in the area! About 15 minutes on foot from Gejo Station.
