Beautiful and evocative in any season
Any time of year, the view of across the tatami through the Satori no Mado, the round window looking onto the garden, is enchanting. This Rinzai Zen temple is also noted for its karesansui, a dry garden that evokes the landscape of a mountain. The garden also has the largest yagura in Kamakura, a grotto with statuary. Of course, the best time to visit is during the hydrangea season. It's best to go on a weekday as it gets very crowded in June when the blooms are at their best.

Worth the entrance fee
You have to pay into a part of the garden of this temple. It costs 500 yen. Its well worth it in my humble opinion, in hydrangea season, but I am an hydrangea fan. I have not visited outside of hydrangea season, so I am not sure if its worth the fee when the hydrangea aren't in bloom. Even though there is a charge into the garden, there is usually crowds of people as it is well known as one of the most beautiful hydrangea temples in the Kamakura area. The garden was larger than I expected.

Hydrangea fan? This temple is a must
Kamakura is such a lovely place for so many reasons - there is a bunch to see and do, especially if you're a history buff. Personally, I'm more into nature than history, but there are plenty of temples in Japan where you can appreciate the natural side of things too. Meigetsu-in is one such temple, and if you're visiting, try to time it with the rainy season. The hydrangeas here are gorgeous (the temple often gets called the hydrangea temple, if that gives you any indication!), and it's well worth the admission fee (500 yen).
