Fascinating history, knowledgeable guide
On a summertime visit to Osaka, I made an early morning excursion to Himeji to see the castle. My advice is to go early in the day to take advantage of the expertise of tour guides at the site. For a fee, you get an in-depth orientation to the history and some intriguing details of the castle architecture and some legends associated with the castle. The castle gardens are extensive and afford excellent views of the keep. Budget plenty of time and pack refreshments for strolling around this beautiful site.

Japan’s most photogenic castle
I’ve been to many castles in Japan, but none that are as consistently photogenic as Himeji Castle. With its relatively recent renovation it looks better than ever, too. Another thing I really like about Himeji Castle is the extent through which you can walk. You can stroll through the passages in the gates and guard towers as well as the main keep. The history behind the castle is also very interesting. When you go, you have to learn the legend behind it’s big well! Finally, the panoramic view of Himeji city that the castle affords is another great reason to visit. If you are heading down towards Kobe or Okayama, this is a must-see (especially when the cherry blossoms are blooming!) Tickets to enter the main area of the caste are 1000 yen per person, though you can stroll the outer areas for free. Himeji Castle is open from 9:00 to 17:00 daily.
