Designated place of scenic beauty
One of the ways Japan protect it's more unique or treasured places is by awarding them the coveted title of a "designated...". There are various types of designated or often called "special" places or items that can be protected. The Iwadatami Rocks of Nagatoro are protected as a designated (or special) place of scenic beauty. The area is really very beautiful and the rock formation is unique. They were named as rock (iwa) tatami (datami) for their appearance. From above they look like layers of tatami. Apart from the beautiful scenery of the rocks and the Arakawa, the area around the Iwadatami is very picturesque with quite a bit to enjoy. Including the Nagatoro Line Kudari; a river ride down possibly the most stunning stretch of the river Ara. The rocks, river and activities are only a short walk from Chichibu Railway Nagatoro station.
