If you like your Italian restaurants with a hearty dose of charm included, check out Trattoria Da Poppi if you're ever in the Gosen area of Niigata (it's known for tulips in spring!) A visit at lunchtime is a good idea because of their excellent value lunch sets, which include the pasta of the day, a half-sized salad, and a drink for 1430 yen including tax. It's a good portion of food and the quality is fab as well. If you plan on visiting, please note they're closed every Tuesday and they do take a break between their lunch and dinner sittings on their other opening days.
