Tasty, pricey Southeast Asian grub served in frigid temperatures
I had wanted to go to a Singapore Seafood Republic for a while by the time the partner and I got around to going one. I had a blast in Singapore (although I've no idea if there is any real connection between country and restaurant chain), I like seafood, and the branch in Shinagawa has a facade that gives of the kind of grandeur that could make a diner feel like some sort of Sir. Stamford Raffles. As it was, we went to the Singapore Seafood Republic in Ginza for an early dinner. With no reservation we were seated at one of the tables away from the massive floor-to-ceiling windows in the 11F restaurant. Shame really, as it looks like the views could have been pretty spectacular. The interior was bright and breezy though with a very high ceiling. As far as I was concerned though, there was little about the interior that reminded me of Singapore. I think most people come to Singapore Seafood Republic for the crab. However, at around 5,000 yen, they were beyond our budget. As it was we went with a prawn dish, sambal fried rice, satay chicken, salad, and chicken / rice with dipping sauces. It's good grub, as one supposed it should be for this kind of price range (you're looking at from 1,800 yen for mains here) and service was prompt and friendly. At around 5 - 6pm the Ginza branch has only a few diners so if you're looking for a bit more buzz or atmosphere, you'd better arrive later (by which time you might need a reservation). A word of caution though, the restaurant might be "Singapore" but it's really cold in there. I don't know if it's in a bid to keep the crabs fresh or what, but it makes for a slightly edgy dining experience. Bring an extra layer. Seriously.
