Somber but important visit while in Nagasaki
We made a point to visit here on our recent trip to Nagasaki - and felt that it was an important visit. The park symbolizes the horror of the events that happened in 1945 but also has a lot of optimism for the future. You're able to see a pillar that shows you where the epicenter of the blast was, and also the remnants of a cathedral pillar that was affected by the blast. There's also the peace statue which has one hand pointed upwards to symbolize the threat of nuclear weapons, and one hand outstretched to the side symbolizing the need for peace. It's a stark reminder of what can happen when the world is at war, and gives you the real understanding of why we can't allow this kind of thing to happen again.
