Breathtaking beauty
I've really come to love and appreciate Japanese gardens during my time living here, and Sankeien in Yokohama is one of the best. There is something to enjoy here in any season, but during spring there are sakura, azaleas, wisteria, irises, and more depending on when you time your visit. One of the iconic times to visit is in autumn when the leaves are changing, but I really don't think there's a time to be disappointed here. Even during winter there are camellias, daffodils, and plum blossoms to admire. At 700 yen for adult admission it's a little pricier than some other gardens I've visited, but I do think if you enjoy traditional gardens it's worth every bit of the entrance fee.

Sankeien Garten
The Sankeiin Garden is a large garden that was built by the entrepreneur Hara Sankei, who mainly produced and traded silk. In the early 1900s he used part of his capital to build a Japanese garden, an oasis he called Sankeien. The garden covers an area of over 175,000 square meters, in three valleys along the coast and includes an outdoor garden that has been open to the public since 1906 and an indoor garden that was originally closed to Sankei's personal use. 17 historical buildings from Kyoto, Kamakura and other areas have been harmonized with nature in the garden. From the Negishi train station you can walk to the garden in about 30 minutes. However, you will be surprised by two very impressive buildings right in front of the garden. Two really beautiful buildings original from Shanghai are located in a small pond. It is a friendship gift from China. At the entrance you will walk between Chinese plum trees to the inner garden area. Most of the traditional old buildings are located there. Embedded in small streams with many beautiful wooden bridges and a small bamboo forest, the area is really nice and perfect for photo shoots. Unfortunately, some buildings were under construction or were closed. The outer garden area has large pond and a small lotus pond. There are also several traditional buildings, some of which can be visited from the inside. The garden also has an old pagoda, high on a mountain. After you have to climb many steps, you are also rewarded with a beautiful view of the city and the garden. Surprisingly there was also a very beautiful bamboo forest behind the pagoda and a small way, which ends another viewing platform. From there you have a view of the nearby industrial area, which you definitely don't expect!
