Impressive shrine
I passed through Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū on a monitor tour a couple of years ago, and I was impressed by it -- and I'm at a point where it takes a bit for a shrine to impress me (no Shania Twain references). The torii is immediately impressive from the street, and the shrine itself has a very imposing feel to it. Something to keep in mind if you visit here is that the shrine has opening hours, it's not 24/7 like some are. Double check that if you're planning to stop by exceptionally early or in the evening.

Kamakura's heart best visited on festivals
You can't miss this shrine as it's in the center of Kamakura life. So here are my recommendations about how to make the most of your visit. If you can spare the time, start at the beach, as the sando path has a number of torii gates that lead to the dankazura, a raised walkway. You can appreciate it in all seasons, but the best choice is walking hanami. Look back towards the beach - the path gradually narrows as it gets closer to the shrine so that it appears longer. Absolutely go during a festival. The ceremonies often include music, either taiko or gagaku. The shrine also has kyudo and yabusame archery. Get an omamori. Hachiman is revered by warriors, so one of the amulets is a tiny sword.
