Shimosato Primary School only stopped operating as a school, due to depopulation, a few years ago. It is now a tourist spot. And despite its remote locations it gets lots of visitors, especially in April when the mature cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The reason it gets so many visitors, apart from the cherry blossoms, is that it features in an anime called Nonnon Biyori. Nonnon Biyori fans know the school as Ashigaoka. It is about to become even more famous as it was recently used as a set in an upcoming movie. There is a cafe, Cafe Mozart, beside it, which sells fresh organic food. The school is not open to the public generally, you can only view from the outside unless you have been invited to a special viewing. You can see quite a bit from the outside though. There's a great playground on the grounds.
