Great area for a getaway
Shimoda is such a beautiful and underrated area of Shizuoka and it has some incredible beaches, like this one, Shirahama Beach. Its about a kilometer long, maybe a bit shorter, and has beautiful white sand. There is a torii on a rock in view from the beach. It is popular for surfing also and there are some shops in the area where you can pick up beach gear. There are also some coin showers by the shops.

Gorgeous, convenient beach
Shirahama Beach was the first beach we ever took our daughter to in Japan, so it holds some special memories for us - I can't believe I haven't reviewed it already. Parking is available right out the front of the beach area, but the times we've visited were mid-week trips. I don't know how easy it would be to park there on a weekend in the peak of summer so just bear that in mind. Another nice thing is that there are convenience stores close by if you need snacks or drinks. I also recommend South Cafe which is a short drive away if you're looking for somewhere to grab lunch - it has a great atmosphere and delicious eats and drinks.

Gorgeous Beach in Shizuoka!
It's summer time, aka beach time! This year, I decided I wanted to stray away from the beach I usually visit! It was time for a change. I ended up going to Shizuoka to check out beaches with my friends. We chose Shirahama beach and I am happy we did! The water was so clear, I could see my feet even when the water was up to my shoulders. There were a lot of people, but the beach was big, so it was fine! The only downside is that all of the parking lots close early! So if you aren't staying at a hotel, be careful! There are a lot of cute shops and restaurants nearby too!
