Free puppet display near Shibuya station

Kihachiro Kawamoto Puppet Gallery is the official english title of this small, but interesting puppet display on the 8th floor of Hikarie beside Shibuya station. There is free entry to the puppet gallery, which only takes about fifteen minutes to spectate, maybe a little longer if you can read the Japanese information displayed beside them. The extremely detailed puppets are from two old NHK TV series: "Romance of the three kingdoms" and "The tale of the Heike". Photography is not allowed in the gallery, but there are a couple of displays outside you can take photos of. The information at the display cases is in Japanese, but they have general information leaflets in English as you come in the door. The display is open from 11 am to 7 pm seven days a week. There are other points of interest on the same floor, most of which are from the arts.

  • A Puppet Gallery for free!

Kitachiro Kawamoto (川本喜八郎) was a famous puppet designer and animator. He was born in 1925 and grew up in Sendagaya, Shibuya. Most Japanese people know him for the puppets he created for the puppet dramas "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" (1982-1984) and "The Tale of the Heike" (1993-1995) which were broadcasted on NHK. In 2010 he died in the age of 85. Two years after his death, a permanent puppet gallery (川本喜八郎人形ギャラリー) was opened by Shibuya City at the 8th floor of the Shibuya Hikarie complex. There you can find a number of very detailed puppets with gorgeous costumes. Especially the facial impressions and kimono are amazing. Take your time to watch all of them. Most explanations are in Japanese, but you can find an English information board and flyer at the entry. It is just a small room, but the admission is free. You can enter it between 11:00 and 19:00.
