Fancy shopping option the wrong side of the tracks

I have to say that Shibuya Hikarie isn't typically on my radar when I'm in Shibuya. It's a little on the posh side (which is not something I generally associate with Shibuya) and it's also on the other side of the station from where most of the Shibuya action is. However, I have found Hikarie to be a good resource for getting some nice gifts for the family back home. In particular The Conran Shop Kitchen which is on the 5th floor. They keep an interesting and classy stock of bits and bobs for the home -- towels, soaps, scrubbers, jams, juices, snacks -- which, for my personal daily use, is out of my price range but I think (or I hope) make for some nice gifts to send home when you've gotten bored of sending novelty "Japanese" stuff. Also, for a bit of indulgence, the sweets, cakes, bread, pastries that are sold on B2F are really nice but, again, a bit pricy. It's worth keeping an eye out for some of the events / exhibits that are held in the creative / event spaces on the upper floors, which I have the feeling probably go under the radar a bit. Plus you can get quite a nice view (and a free one) over Shibuya from the windows up there.

Shopping centre with fine dining, arts and culture

Hikarie is a short walk from the East exit of Shibuya station. It is only a couple of years old and the area around it is still undergoing redevelopment. The building itself is a comfortable modern building with a touch of class. It is well maintained and has a pretty good lay out. There is a good selection of shops, services, eateries and facilities. The upper floors in particular have some interesting facilities including a theatre, art gallery, puppet gallery, event space and even a Disaster Prevention training facility. In the basement, one down, there is a quiet branch of Starbucks. The basement goes down five levels! It is a bit short on elevators, but there are esculators and stairs too. There are lots of toilets. The building is mainly non-smoking, but there are some smoking rooms. There are also some vending machines in select areas. The shopping centre is open seven days a week from 10 am to 9 pm. Some shops and services within the centre have separate opening hours.
