More than just an aquarium
The Saitama Aquarium in Hanyu has a pretty bad reputation. And in fact the very first time we visited it we weren't that enamored with it. But that was eight years ago, so we were pleasantly surprised when we revisited it recently. They have made several improvements and have some great hands on experiences for children now too. The collection has also improved. The aquarium is entirely of fish, amphibians and reptiles that live in and around freshwater (rivers and lakes etc). They have some really unusual fish and amphibians, including wooper loopers. The park around the aquarium has also improved since our last visit. It now has a really fantastic playground that was put in just after our last visit. The aquarium is reasonably priced. Most of the events are free. The mascot often makes an appearance. Parking is free and plentiful.

Small but nice aquarium
There is no English, so if you are wishing to learn about the fish aside from their scientific names, you won’t get much out of the visit. However, for children it is fantastic. the size of the aquarium itself is rather small, but it makes it easy for small children to get around. The fish are all river fish, but there is an interesting selection from very small fish to much bigger ones. there is also an area where you can touch turtles and crawfish. The crawfish seem sorta dead and as an adult, its creepy and sad, but the turtles are surprisingly friendly and my two year old loved it. We went on a holiday, so there were tons of children and the touching area would fill up and be surrounded until the group moved on and the next came in. The outside grounds of the aquarium was my favorite part. Koi ponds, a stream and plenty of benches to sit and enjoy as my son ran around admiring the fish everyone was feeding. We also partook feeding the fish, purchasing a capsule of pellets for a 100 en from the dispensers. There was also matsuri games and a foot bath with doctor fish. 5 mins for 300 yen, my son had his shoes and socks off before I even had my money out to pay.
