An Ethical Cat Cafe
I absolutely adore cats. Unfortunately, the strict apartment rules in Japan have prevented me from having one as a pet. That's where cat cafes come in, though! However, a lot of cat cafes in Japan are for-profit institutions that don't really care about the well being of their cats. The cats are fed tranquilizers to calm them down; they're kept in cramped cages; they are disposed of when they get too old or not cute enough. Like I said, I love cats. And I couldn't go to a cat cafe that treated the cats like that with a clean conscious. But that's where Cat Cafe Miysis comes in! They're conveniently located near Kannai in Yokohama, and they treat their cats with care and respect. Now that's something I can get behind. However, for this reason, the cafe may look a little dingier and dirtier than the newer for-profit ones are. It's also a bit more expensive, though you still get a complimentary drink with your visit. But, it's definitely worth it to support their mission. A lot of the cats that they have were once strays living on the streets. For that reason, some are missing eyes, or have other disabilities. Don't let that stop you because those cats are so friendly and love getting your attention! They don't get rid of or hide away "problem cats", either. There is one cat they warn you about before entering named Mogwai (Mogu-chan). He is a temperamental little thing, so the staff recommends you don't approach him, but let him approach you. Here, it's the cats' world and you're just living in it.
